This is quite odd and I feel ashamed that I’ve missed it. Apparently, “the Hunt for Gollum”, the ‘inspired by Lord of the Rings’ independent movie by fans has been released. I thought it wasn’t happening until later this year, but this $3,000 budget production is already available over at thehuntforgollum.com.

I have to say that I’m rather impressed, both by the timing of making it free and only available online – but also from the quality, rating it only off the trailer so far. It seems like someone did their PR and viral lesson.

About
The Hunt For Gollum is an unofficial not for profit short film by a group of enthusiast filmmakers. As a Lord of the Rings Fan Film, we are not affiliated with the Tolkien Estate or New Line Cinema and are producing this project as an entirely non commercial film. As with other fan films we are making this purely for the enjoyment of the material and the experience of making a high quality low budget film.

Free Distribution
As a non-profit production, the entire film will be released online for FREE download only on the internet on www.hunt4gollum.com

Kudos!

Wow! Check this list out that was put together by Torrentfreak.com, it shows the Top 10 Most Pirated Movies of 2008. Torrents have obviously been around for a good while now ‘on the market’, but I think it’s safe to say that in 2008 it became more common knowledge than ever. The Dark Knight tops the list with a good million, and rightly so. I was a bit disappointed when I noticed that it had dropped to #4 on IMDB’s Top 250 movies of all times. The Dark Knight now has the same rating as Pulp Fiction (8.9) – and almost equal the number of votes.

Anyway, back to the piracy. If you add the top 10 up, and bare in mind that this is only from BitTorrent sources (meaning; no ‘old school’ sharing such as DC++, and no ‘new school’ such as Rapidshare) – you get a neat number of 52.49 million downloads.

If you remember my post Avril Lavigne passes 100 million views on YouTube, you know that I like comparing these kind of numbers to country population (even though it’s completely unrealistic, I know). So here we go again:

Almost all of Italy downloaded anyone of these movies once.

Everyone in Chile, The Netherlands, and Australia downloaded anyone of these movies once.

In Sweden, everyone could have (and probably did) downloaded 6 of these movies (and added another outside the list).

In Denmark, everyone could have downloaded all 10 of them.

There you have it.

I saw Charlie Wilson’s War the other day. It’s a true story, a portrait about Charlie Wilson, a politician in the U.S. House of Representatives from the Second District of Texas, who pretty much single handed helped get funds into Afghanistan to drive out the Soviets and thereby end the Cold War in the late 80s.

This is a movie that has somewhat slipped under the radar for me, despite having a cast with Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman, where the last is absolute brilliant – yet again (he got nominated for an Oscar).

“Good Time Charlie” was the nickname that Charlie Wilson picked up for his notorious personal life. He staffed his office with young, tall and attractive women who were dubbed “Charlie’s Angels” by other members of Congress. In 1986 Charlie was actually put on the spot by U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani, who in his hunt for white collar crime, investigated Wilson for allegedly snorting cocaine at a hot-tub party with naked women in Las Vegas. In 1993, Wilson was given a special award by the CIA’s director, recognising him as ‘an honoured colleague’ of the clandestine intelligence community.

Charlie Wilson was also a quote machine, check out this beauty:
“You can teach them to type, but you can’t teach them to grow tits.” (On the question “does the Congressman only hire beautiful women? ” to one of his secretaries).

The most classic quote is of course in the last title card:
“These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world…
…and then we fucked up the end game.” – Charlie Wilson

Good movie. Indeed.

Even though these kind of “documentary” style movies have been existing for a while (having been jump started by The Blairwitch Project) it’s good to see one with a slightly different budget than the other cheap stories we’ve seen in the same area.

Even though I’m not completely sure what the budget was, you’d have to give the guys working on the marketing an extra pad on the shoulder for the fantastic viral campaign they pretty much launched without even knowing so.

Not great, but cool.

I don’t want to say it all succeeded as anyone could see Mascherano’s sending off coming a mile away, I would have sent him off way earlier, but why wasn’t Fantastic there? or why didn’t Alonso who stood right next to him and saw the bashing try to cut in between? Anyway, I’m sure that Rafa will blame Sir Alex’s tries to get on the good side with the ref, but it was a red – and will always be a red, so no argues there. The main issue was just that United was a better side, a MUCH better side when it was needed the most, this is also why they’re topping the table and Liverpool are struggling to keep fourth place, some 15 points behind. I think it was actually the 7th straight game where Liverpool failed to score at Old Trafford, the last run only being broken by an own goal by O’shea, so who can we blame really? It all ended three nil after two clown-rush outs on corners from Reina, he definately didn’t look very sharp in the air, nor will he ever. But you have to give cudos to the man for saving maybe 3-4 other clear chances that easily would have tallied the scoreline to 5-0 on a horrific day.

Right after the final whistle blew we were off to Stamford Bridge with Andy Gray and Sky Sports “Grand Slam Sunday”, gotta love that name. It has a better tone to it, as Matte said: “Canal+ choose to call it Super Sunday” – lack of creativity from Hegerfors perhaps? Chelsea – Arsenal always looked before as it was going to be the better game out of the two, and indeed it didn’t fail us. Chelsea got the winner, Drogba was completely useless for almost 70 minutes but then bang bang! and suddenly he was every Chelsea fan hero with two goals, game winners as well. It ended 2-1 in the end, Sagna gave Arsenal the lead before the Drogba show started.

I’ve seen a couple of movies this weekend, I just had to see Meet the Spartans, the trailer looked pretty funny but in the end it was more than worthy of its #58 IMDB bottom movies of all times, 2.2 score says it all! Before that I had a Saturday containing of going back a couple of years, first I saw There will be blood which I think swept the floor at the Oscars, Daniel Day Lewis got the Oscar for leading role. Good movie! Unfortunately The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford which I thought was going to be really cool didn’t really live up to the hype, it’s been lifted off the ground by many critics and has a good grade on IMDB, buuuuuuut – no.

Besides that, I spend most of my time either reading up on stuff I need to know for work, or modding a new Hattrick Community I’m building with Wordpress. Hopefully it’ll be neeeeat.

Been watching quite some movies the latest week, saw Jerry Seinfeld’s Bee Movie yesterday and I’ll have to say it was somewhat disappointing, I’d expect it to be up there with Toy Story, but it definately didn’t reach up there. I saw Beowulf the other week and that was, as IMDB rightly shows – just marginaly better! I’m not sure what to think of those semi-animated films, but it sometimes feels like a way to save something that wouldn’t have been so good without some originality. I also saw The Darjeeling Limited which stars Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman as three brothers on a recreational find yourself tour across India, amusing at times, great at times – but not all the way. Definately worth a watch though. Michael Clayton is the new Tony Gilroy (who did the Bourne trilogy) and George Clooney film which gave Tilda Swinton an Oscar for best supporting actress, I think it was also nominated for a couple of more Oscars, including best motion picture and best director. Oh, it also stars Sydney Pollack – a great actor according to me! Michael Clayton is definately worth to look at as well, it might be your “standard-true-story-conspiracy-drama-thriller” at first glance at the thriller, but there’s really more to it.

I don’t know if I mentioned Into the Wild before, but that’s a keeper for the collection. The new Sean Penn movie stars Emile Hirsch as Christopher McCandless (with truly SPOOKY resemblance), a collage graduate that wants to live in the wild in Alaska. Based on a true story (of course), Sean Penn really knows how to deliver a top performance. However, I have no idea how Hal Holbrook was nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor, while the film was overlooked in the best motion picture category. Shame.

But after watching Gone Baby Gone I start to wonder if it’s maybe the other way? Affleck, who not only wrote the screenplay but also directed a cast containing younger brother Casey along with heavyweights Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris truly makes it in style. Gone Baby Gone is definately a keeper in my collection, 8.0/10 on IMDB might just be too low!

Now it’s not only a strong competitor but definately one of the best “investigating” blogs you can find. If you’re considering downloading something, be sure to check out the quality and reports first has always been a rule. But it’s not until now that this rule can easily be checked without visiting half of the Internet.

Pick of the year for sure.
