It’s been a while
Since my last post, I won’t apologize for that! Big things have happened over christmas and new years (happy to all of you for surviving yet another year!); I’ve got a job that involves moving to Dublin, Ireland – and I’ve finally taken my drivings licence! I know, it’s unbelievable, I never thought that day would come, haha.
Last week I was up in Östersund, Mia had her graduation ceremony meaning a lot of people, a lot of good food and too much good wine. Student SkiWeek, the week when all of Sweden’s students come together for an awesome time in Vemdalen and Åre started last Sunday, I went home on Monday – bad timing for sure!
Oh, I’ve seen the worst movie of all times! Treasure Raiders, it stars actor/writer Alexander Nevsky, which is Russia’s answer to Arnold I guess – truly one of the worst actors of all times, writers too of course. I thought that David Carradine (Bill in Kill Bill) would be able to save the movie, but it just didn’t happen. I’d gladly advice you all to rate it 0 (or 1) star at IMDB, we have to warn people! Yeah, and in other movieworld news; Heath Ledger was found dead today, appearently he was really eager to join the “death at 27″-club. Pretty wierd, it seemed as if he was really on top of things after Broke Back, which is another movie I haven’t seen yet, but probably should …
I hope you all saw Sweden’s victory over Spain in the Handball Euro Championships yesterday, it featured one of the most interesting coaching moves in modern times. After being warned for passive play, the Spaniards lined up to take a free throw, which in handball basically means that it’s one pass and then throw, specially under passive play warnings. So all the Swedes just made a wall in front of the thrower (which is of course usually the one that shoots hardest and best), and then came the master move by the Spanish coach – he pulled the goalie! The score was 26-26 and their coach obviously thought that by bringing on an extra attacker, Spain would put some extra pressure on the Swedes the last 10 seconds. However, when it’s a free throw and passive play, that extra attacker won’t be able to help AT ALL. He will just stand somewhere in the crowd, leaving the own goal completely open. This means that it could backfire within seconds – which of course happened. The Swedish keeper Svensson saved the free throw, took the ball and passed it to a Swedish player on the run – and it’s not that hard in handball to score in an open net from nine meters … Heads are probably rolling in the Spanish press today!
Look out Wikipedia
This week Google started inviting a selected group of people to try their new, free tool which goes by the name of Knol. Knol, according to the Google Blog stands for “a unit of knowledge” and the company further writes that the goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it.
Knol is different from Wikipedia in a number of ways, besides incorporating a major rating system, which in opposite to Wikipedia does not keep users anonymous, it also holds a way for contributers to earn cash through publishing articles. I’m not completely convinced that this is the right field of business for Google, but we’ll just have to wait and see!
Yahoo and Excite both passed on Google
I just finished reading The Google Story, a really good book on how this entreprenurial project started and grew into a multi billiondollar corporation.
In the book it’s also reported that when Larry Page and Sergej Brin, the founders of Google tried to pitch the idea to every major search company in the market, they all passed on the technology at the modest price of $1 million. I don’t think the investment/project valuator that worked at Yahoo and Excite at the time still holds his position …
