Came across “Gary’s Social Media Count” today via Ronnestam. If this doesn’t have the famous “wow factor”, I’m not sure what does. All of these stats fits in quite well with the recently released “Did You Know?” from The Economist.

The app has been rated as many times as 1806 at the time of this writing. Quite remarkable.

Spotify Mobile really hit the media (and social sphere) when the story was published. I don’t think there’s a single medium where the story haven’t been posted/dugg/liked/whatever. It spread like a bushfire in a summer breeze throughout Twitter and Digg – they really got everyone excited. Including me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to build up some “but”-action here; I love Spotify, and I love the app. I have to say though, that what’s really interesting in all of this is to monitor search patterns on both mobile and premium. Premium being Spotify’s (paid) member service which offers no ads, higher sound quality, unlimited travel access, and exclusive access to pre-releases. So why is this interesting? For one, Premium is of course required in order for you to use Spotify Mobile. The second reason is a killer; search volume index for Spotify Premium is actually greater than the volume for Spotify Mobile:

Not only was it greater during the actual release (when the bushfire spread); it spiked higher, it lasted longer, and it has maintained on a higher level. Of course, as the disclaimer indicates “several approximations are used when computing these results”. Still a good indication of what’s happening.

Is Spotify finally making (decent) money?

(Spotify Mobile picture from Press/Images on Spotify.com)

“Personas is a component of the Metropath(ologies) exhibit, currently on display until Sept 09 at the MIT Museum by the Sociable Media Group from the MIT Media Lab (Please contact us if you want to show it next!). It uses sophisticated natural language processing and the Internet to create a data portrait of one’s aggregated online identity. In short, Personas shows you how the Internet sees you.”

Very interesting, would you agree with your Personas?

I just watched the beautiful “HOME” documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. It has +1M views on YouTube after about a month. I’d warmly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. A bit “propagandic” in an Inconvenient Truth way, but hey – it’s only the truth this time around too. Some key takeaways:

20% of the world’s population consumes 80% of its resources

The world spends 12 times more on military expenditures than on aid to developing countries

5,000 people a day die because of dirty drinking water. 1 billion people have no access to safe drinking water

Nearly 1 billion people are going hungry

Over 50% of grain traded around the world is used for animal feed or biofuels

40% of arable land has suffered long-term damage

Every year, 13 millions hectares of forest disappear

One mammal in 4, one bird in 8, one amphibian in 3 are threatened with extinction. Species are dying at a rhythm 1,000 times faster than the natural rate

Three quarters of fishing grounds are exhausted, depleted or in dangerous decline

The average temperature of the last 15 years have been the highest ever recorded

The ice cap is 40% thinner than 40 years ago

There may be at least 200 million climate refugees by 2050

Scary.

After being up a day or two, Microsoft launched their first Bing ad push a couple of hours ago.

“For decisions that matter, Bing & decide”

This slogan and video is part of the $100M that Microsoft reportedly are willing to spend on the Bing promotion, good or bad? I took this video from the Bing YouTube channel, is it comedy (or clever) that they’re utilizing a Google-property to reach critical mass among users?

I’m still torn about the name (to put it polite), the reasoning behind the name is of course that it’s easy to “verb up“, while evangelizing the phrase “Bing me” or “Bing it” as reported by Wired. Another comment about the name that Steve Ballmer has made is “We [Microsoft] just wanted something that “unambiguously says ’search.’” — yeah, about that Steve – I’m not so sure about that one. It’s going to be really interesting to see how it performs over the next few weeks though.

One thing is certain though, Oscar Karlsten the chess player, who started playing Chess for Boden’s Chess Club in 1928 is way more popular over at Bing than on Google. Dammit!

Implement Twitter Connect, check. This is somewhat old news as Twitter Connect or “Sign in with Twitter” has been out for quite some time via the Twitter API. For some reason it has been slightly quiet about it, not your regular boom-blast and video tutorials that we saw with the Facebook Connect release. It’s understandable though, as Facebook handles a significant higher portion of (personal) data.

I tried the Twit Connect plugin for Wordpress to do my implementation. I believe it’s the first of its kind, at least for Wordpress, created by Shannon Whitley. He has also written a short tutorial on how you go about implementing Twit Connect on your Wordpress site. Sebastien Couture wrote another one on the same topic.

Getting it to work properly is really easy and straight forward. All you need to do is register an application with Twitter to obtain your consumer key and consumer secret. You’ll need this for the plugin settings later. Once you’ve entered all necessary information on the settings page for Twit Connect, you’re good to go. How’s that for out-of-the-box? Oh, if you get a “Can’t open secret file” when you try to save your settings it’s because of the file permissions of the files in your twitconnect folder.

The only negative feedback I have is that it seems to be ‘early beta’ for Twit Connect. It works as intended, sure – but it’s quite messy if you want to modify it in any way. I’m no whizkid when it comes to CSS, and as it’s all integrated in the twitconnect.php – it makes it a bit of a hassle. I’d prefer a separate CSS for the next release! I also wonder if it would be possible to have a Twitter user’s comment tweeted out on Twitter? Similar to wall posting via FB-connect. That’d be neat too.

Anyway, you’ll notice the ‘Sign in with Twitter’-button right below the FB-connect dito in posts now. You can use both to sign in and make comments without entering your details. Try it out!
